There are a lot of questions when redoing your floors. Let us help you out with a few of them…

1. Which is better? Prefinished or Unfinished?

Both flooring options have their pros and cons.

The pros to prefinished are pretty obvious, the flooring doesn’t need to be finished! You don’t have to worry about the dust, the polyurethane, the extra time it takes to finish the floor and let it dry, or the smell. The cons are that, while there are a lot of great colors and styles available, if you can’t find the exact color you’re looking for, you’re not getting that color.

The pros to unfinished are exactly the opposite: you can pick your colors, finishes, and how many coats you use to make a truly custom floor. The cons are that it takes much longer to install, sand, and finish the floor. You’ll also need to let it dry properly before returning furniture to the floor and the smell of the polyurethane can be somewhat strong.

2.       Which should I choose? Satin, Semi-gloss, or High gloss finish?

This is a preference question. There are benefits to each: Satin hides most of the scratches and wear and tear that high gloss will show immediately, while high gloss gives the mirrored look  of grandeur and looks more expensive, where satin is a bit dull. Semi-gloss is the happy medium between the two and therefore more popular that it’s counterparts. Semi- gloss gives shine to your floor while keeping the look of scratches down.

3.       What is Loose Lay and what is a “floating” floor?

Loose Lay is a product where one plank does not get attached to the next. With many flooring products, the boards or planks are nailed, stapled or glued to the subfloor and click into each other like puzzle pieces. Loose Lay works only for “floating” floor projects where the flooring is not being attached to the subfloor but securely sitting on top of it.

4.       Can I refinish my wood floors after a few years if I don’t like them?

The simplest answer to this is, sure! Why not?

If you want to refinish your floors, you first must determine what you’re working with. This may be a simple task if you put the floors in and you know what they are. If not, ask a professional to take a look. If your floors are solid wood then most likely you can sand them down and refinish them. If they’re engineered, however, you may not. Engineered hardwood usually only has a thin layer of solid wood on the top of the board and refinishing may cause the plywood underneath to show through.

5.       Can I really afford this?

Absolutely! Whether you’re refinishing or replacing; if you need 150 sq ft of 1500 sq ft; almost everything can be fit in to your budget. You can save money on the type of flooring, the cost of finishes, ever certain labor costs can be cut down. For example, if you can’t afford to rip out your existing oak floors and put in brand new dark stained walnut, why not refinish them? We have a plethora of ways to make sure your floors and your wallet are happy!

6.       Can you take out my furniture and put it back for me? How about my baseboards?

Of course! There is a small charge for both these services but we can do both for you easily!

7.       What if I don’t like any of the given stain colors? Can you custom make colors?

Yes! We can create a sample board for you so you can see exactly what the floor color will look like.
